The participation of local areas (POLAR) classification groups areas across the UK based on the proportion of the young population that participates in higher education (HE).
The POLAR classification looks at how likely young people are to participate in HE across the UK and shows how this varies by area.
Last updated July 2015
The data on young people is taken from those reaching 18 between 2005 and 2009. The census data is from the 2001 census, post code data from 2015.

Postcode to Area Groups: This file provides a lookup between unit postcode and a classification of 2001 Census area statistics wards by young participation and adult qualification levels.
Casward to Area Groups: This file provides a lookup between 2001 Census area statistic wards and a classification of 2001 Census area statistics wards by young participation and adult qualification levels
Postcode to Area Groups is too large to import into excel so other tools are required to open if any cleansing is required.
Postcodes are written without the central space so either cleansing or scripting may be required to link with other data sources that contain postcodes.
Postcode to Area Groups: 2557414 records (July 2015)
Casward to Area Groups: 10654 data records (September 2012)
