National Pupil Database

The National Student Database is the ‘go to’ source for information on pupils and students up to the age of 18 in England. Access is granted after an application form and security questions are submitted. Data is split into tiers depending how sensitive the data is. Applicants apply for access to separate tiers.

Depending on tier/extract applied for, The institution history table seems to be the key table for linking datasets together: School Level Database has individual reference number, institution name, postcodes etc.

Data issues

Data is sensitive and anonymised depending on tier. In some instances it is hard to group results to a region.

Scale of data

Rows and scope depends on tier applied for. Data all Schools within England at set intervals (depending on dataset) from 2002.

Whilst the holding page and information about the database is under an Open Government Licence, the data itself must be applied for. Depending upon the tier, the data may come under data protection laws.
